Most men cannot point to the moment they learned to hide their feelings. The lesson often came in small increments. You cried and someone laughed. You admitted fear and heard, "Be a man." You needed comfort and found silence. They called it growing up, toughening up, being a man.
Over time, we learned which feelings were welcome and which ones might cost us respect and acceptance.
This is the quiet harm of toxic masculinity. It is less a childhood injury than conditioning: a norm absorbed so early and so completely that it feels like our own personality. We were not hurt in one moment. We were trained to conform, and the training stripped away feelings we were born with. This is how most men body armor settle in.
